MUNARI SCHOOL COMPLEX
FLOW Architecture has teamed up with a group of Italian architects and engineers to deliver the design of a pre-primary school complex in the northern Italian village of Arcugnano.
The proposed urban solution provides the creation of a new green link between the school complex, the existing adjacent leisure ground, and the churchyard. The idea is to enhance the multifunctional value of the churchyard and the neighbouring green spaces with the diversification of a garden area in front of the school, an educational agricultural zone, and a public park in the area in front of the church.
The primary point of the architectural intervention is the valorisation of the existing structures on site. To this end, the most suitable area for the expansion of the existing pre-primary school is the part of the building currently used as nursery. Allowing for formal and functional continuity with the main existing body, the proposal introduces the preservation of the existing service spine, and the demolition and redevelopment of the rest of the existing structure, with a new proposed extension of 300 m2.
The intervention includes the new functionalisation of the interiors of the pre-primary school, offering 2 new classrooms with bathrooms and a canteen and kitchen in the new extension, and a new classroom and a new dormitory in the existing body. Also, the external niches are enclosed to augment the space for soft play and to provide a new entrance area.
Characterised by a fluid design, a new 400 m2 nursery building will be built on Via Monte Zattolo, creating a new front for the complex and the partial enclosure of the central green areas. The interiors will provide new classrooms and bathrooms, the dormitories, the office and the teachers’ room, a canteen with kitchen and the reception areas.
The new nursery, as well as the proposed new extension of the pre-primary school will be realized with XLAM technology. The roof and the facades are cladded in dark bronze zinc with inlets cladded in timber and dark aluminium glazing.
